Mundakayam Medical Trust Hospital was established in 1965 to serve about 1,80,000 people who work in estates and rubber plantations in and around Mundakayam. It is located in the rural part of the Idukki district, one of Kerala's most disadvantaged areas. The hospital was created through a collaboration of plantation officials and locals, and it was handed over to the Congregation of Medical Mission sisters for management and services. It began with 30 beds, 5 departments, and a casualty service. On June 25, 1999, after 34 years of dedicated and profitable service, the ownership and management of the hospital were handed over to the Kanjirappally Diocese. The hospital expanded rapidly to its current status in response to the people's needs under the patronage of the Diocese of Kanjirappally. Now it has a capacity of 250 beds with departments of general medicine, general surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatrics, orthopaedics, anaesthesia, ENT, and dermatology. This institution employs 13 senior consultants, 3 casualty medical officers, 22 religious sisters, 60 nursing staff, and 50 paramedical staff.
