The name GEM comes from the hospital's specialty, Gastroenterology Medical Centre and Hospital. In 2001, the GEM hospital opened its first location in Coimbatore. It was Asia's first and most advanced tertiary healthcare centre for gastrointestinal and laparoscopic surgery. The hospital's services were extended to Tirupur, Erode, and Thrissur. It is also Kerala's first hospital to concentrate in this subject. In 2016, the 50-bed hospital opened its doors. GEM Digestive Diseases Foundation was established to aid the impoverished and economically disadvantaged general public by providing free or subsidised treatment. The hospital in Thrissur intends to continue the service provided by its parent organisation by holding free camps, awareness programmes, financial assistance to the poor and needy, and so on.
